Working with the community

WaterSecure is contributing to our region’s future water security by supplying new sources of safe, pure water. We are also working with local communities and like-minded community groups to make positive long term contributions to South East Queensland communities.

We are currently undertaking two major initiatives:
art_workshop_2School art workshops – We are working with Reverse Garbage to run art workshops with Grade 5 and Grade 9 students at schools near our plants and pipelines. The kids will use reclaimed “garbage” (high quality industrial discards) to create pieces of art focused on a water reuse and savings theme. The workshops will not only give students a better understanding of the water cycle, urban water use and reuse but will also teach them to look at recycled materials in a new way and challenge their creativity. Workshops are underway and will be held throughout the first semester of 2010 with the resulting art works to be displayed at a community exhibition mid-year. Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit community cooperative that diverts reusable industrial discards from landfill and sells them to the public at a low cost.

study_webQUT Bursary – Through the Queensland University of Technology we have provided three second-year students with $5000 grant to assist with study-related costs. The bursaries were awarded to two students studying a Bachelor of Science and one student undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering, helping to ensure new skilled workers for the industry.

Throughout construction the Gold Coast Desalination Plant and WCRW Project provided community grants and sponsorship to community, environment and sporting groups, giving back to the communities affected by construction activities. Click here to view a list of the groups and projects that received community grants from WCRW. The WCRW Project also ran a number of educational competitions for kids including safety and water recycling poster competitions. The winning entries from these were published as calendars in 2008 and 2009. The GCD Alliance provided sponsorship to a variety of Gold Coast community and sporting groups.

New partnerships
