WaterSecure reaches 50 billion litre mark
2 February 2010
The Gold Coast Desalination Plant and the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project have now supplied a combined total of more than 50 billion litres to the South East Queensland Water Grid.
This amount of water is equivalent to approximately 20,000 official Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Keith Davies, Chief Executive Officer of WaterSecure, the statutory authority responsible for the schemes, said this was a great achievement for the organisation and proof of the important contribution being made to the South East Queensland region.
“The desalination plant has the capacity to supply up to 133 megalitres to the water grid each day or enough water for over 665,000 residents consuming 200 litres of water per day, while the Western Corridor Project has the capacity to supply 232 megalitres of purified recycled water a day to industry customers such as power stations” Mr Davies said.
“The desalination plant has been supplying up to 3000 litres a second, a huge amount of water which is freeing up pressure on our dams.”
The Western Corridor Recycled Water Project is the largest recycled water scheme to be constructed in Australia and the third largest advanced water treatment project in the world.
The Gold Coast Desalination Plant was named 2009 Global Membrane Desalination Plant of the Year and Western Corridor named 2009 Water Reuse Project of the Year by Global Water Intelligence.
